Finance for radiologists

The most capital-intensive specialty in medicine deserves a broker who can fund it properly.

5.0 · 156+ reviews 45+ lenders 2,000+ medicos helped

Radiologists in Australia can access specialist lending built for the scale their profession operates at: equipment finance for imaging fleets, up to 100% of purchase price or valuation on owner-occupied practice premises, and home lending at up to 95% LVR with no LMI. Radiology is the most capital-intensive branch of private medicine, where a single clinic can carry a seven-figure equipment stack before it scans its first patient, and where group ownership through multiple entities is the norm rather than the exception. MedX Finance is a specialist medical finance broker with access to 45+ lenders and deep experience across single and multi-location specialist practices, from startups to established groups.

Why is radiology the most capital-intensive specialty?

Because the practice is built around machines few other businesses ever buy. A new MRI system is typically a seven-figure purchase once installed. CT is commonly a high six-figure to seven-figure purchase, and even the workhorse modalities, ultrasound and X-ray, sit in the tens to hundreds of thousands per unit. Then the building has to hold it all: radiation shielding, reinforced slabs and structural work that a generic fitout never faces. Funding that stack well takes lenders who understand imaging assets and a broker who can spread the structure across more than one of them.

How do lenders assess radiology group structures?

Radiology is a group specialty. Practices are commonly owned by several radiologists through companies, trusts and unit structures, with individual radiologists billing in their own name and paying service fees to the practice entity. Lenders assess that income well only when it is presented properly; read naively, service fees look like cost rather than structure. And because referrals follow the doctor, there is typically little goodwill in specialist practice, so buy-ins are priced around equity, premises and equipment. MedX Finance works with these structures constantly, for first buy-ins, partner retirements and multi-site expansions.

How are imaging equipment and refresh cycles funded?

An imaging fleet is never finished. Major modalities are typically refreshed on multi-year cycles as technology and referrer expectations move, which means a radiology group is almost always mid-cycle on something. The goal is finance terms matched to each asset's earning life, spread across lenders so no single exposure caps the group's next move. With 45+ lenders, MedX Finance can structure the fleet as a portfolio rather than a pile of one-off loans, and a 48-hour lending strategy shows you what that looks like before you commit to anything.

The radiology funding stack

Imaging equipment. MRI, CT, ultrasound, X-ray, mammography and interventional suites, financed against the assets and matched to their working lives.
Premises. Purpose-built space with shielding and structural requirements. Up to 100% of purchase price or valuation on owner-occupied practice premises.
Fitout. Shielded rooms, patient flow, reporting suites and IT that carries the imaging workload.
Buy-ins and group equity. Little goodwill, so buy-ins are structured around equity, premises and equipment, across however many entities the group runs.
Home. Up to 95% LVR with no LMI under medico lending policy, kept clean and separate from the practice stack.

From first conversation to settlement

Plenty of our clients talk to us long before a loan exists: weighing a practice purchase, planning a fitout, or working out what their career unlocks. That early thinking costs nothing and is some of the most valuable work we do. And when you are ready to move, it runs like this:
1. Today: talk to a specialist. 15 minutes on your situation and goals. No credit check, no cost.
2. Within 48 hours: your lending strategy. Which lenders fit your stage and structure, what you can borrow, what it costs.
3. Application to approval. We package, submit and chase. Timing depends on the lender and the deal, and you will always know where things stand.
4. Approval to settlement. We coordinate through to the finish, and stay your broker for the loans that come after.

Frequently asked questions

Can one lender fund a whole imaging clinic?

Sometimes, but it is rarely the best answer. Splitting property, fitout and equipment across the right lenders usually gets better terms on each piece and leaves headroom for the next machine. That is the advantage of a broker with 45+ lenders rather than one bank with one appetite.

I am buying into an established radiology group. How is that priced?

Typically around equity, premises and equipment rather than goodwill, because in specialist practice the referrals follow the doctor. Your buy-in lending is structured to match, and MedX Finance has deep experience across exactly these transactions.

We are a group of radiologists starting a new clinic. Is that fundable?

Startups are harder than acquisitions, but they are a core part of what MedX Finance does. The strength of the founding radiologists' incomes and the quality of the plan carry the application, and presentation decides how lenders read both.

Does equipment age count against us when we borrow again?

Lenders look at the whole picture, and the assets a practice runs on are part of it. Structured as a portfolio from the start, each refresh becomes routine rather than a renegotiation.

Does using MedX Finance cost me anything?

No. We are paid by the lender when your loan settles, and we are transparent about those arrangements. No cost, no obligation, ever.
