Buying a medical practice

Finance the purchase, up to 100% of it, against the value of the practice itself.

5.0 · 156+ reviews 45+ lenders 2,000+ medicos helped

Buying a medical practice is financed with a practice acquisition loan, and for eligible medical professionals lenders will fund up to 100% of the purchase price against the practice's goodwill. What you can borrow turns on the practice's cash flow and your professional profile and income. How those two are presented is the critical piece. MedX Finance structures acquisition finance across 45+ mainstream and specialist lenders as part of a broader medical practice finance strategy, with your lending strategy back within 48 hours.

How does a practice acquisition loan work?

An acquisition loan funds the purchase of an established practice, with repayments serviced by the cash flow the practice already generates. Lenders typically assess the practice's financial history, the patient or client base, the lease, and how dependent revenue is on the departing vendor. Those same factors are all tied up in how the goodwill is valued, which is why they matter twice. Our job is to have those questions answered inside the application before a credit team asks them, and to put the deal in front of the lender whose policy actually fits it.

What is goodwill and how much can you borrow against it?

Goodwill is everything the practice is worth beyond its equipment and fitout: the patient base, recurring billings, referral relationships and reputation. In most industries banks will not lend against it. For medical, dental and veterinary practices they will, and eligible medical professionals can access up to 100% goodwill lending on practice purchases. Every lender approaches goodwill differently, so the same practice can land very differently from one lender to the next. That is the power of speaking to multiple lenders through MedX Finance rather than taking one bank's view. Background reading: goodwill loans for medical professionals.

Do you need a deposit or property security?

Not always. There are lenders that will fund the right purchase without a cash deposit or bricks and mortar security, and where a lender does want additional cover, we will show you exactly what it changes before you commit. If the sale includes the premises, the freehold can usually be financed alongside the practice under a commercial property facility.

From first look to settlement: the acquisition timeline

  1. Valuation and appraisal. Establish what the practice is genuinely worth: billings, patient base, staffing, lease terms and equipment condition.
  2. Offer and heads of agreement. Agree price and key terms with the vendor. Involving your specialist here means the deal is shaped with lending in mind.
  3. Due diligence. Your accountant and solicitor verify the financials, contracts, lease and compliance. We run finance in parallel so lending is never the bottleneck.
  4. Finance approval. Application packaged and submitted to the lender matched to your profession and the deal structure.
  5. Settlement. Funds flow, the practice transfers, and you own it. Timeframes vary with the deal, and preparation is what keeps you at the short end. General information only, not financial advice. Eligibility, structures and terms depend on your circumstances and lender criteria.

From first conversation to settlement

Plenty of our clients talk to us long before a loan exists: weighing a practice purchase, planning a fitout, or working out what their career unlocks. That early thinking costs nothing and is some of the most valuable work we do. And when you are ready to move, it runs like this:
1. Today: talk to a specialist. 15 minutes on the practice you are looking at and your position. No credit check, no cost.
2. Within 48 hours: your lending strategy. Which lenders fit the deal, what you can borrow, and how the goodwill component should be structured.
3. Application to approval. We package, submit and chase. Timing depends on the lender and the deal, and you will always know where things stand.
4. Approval to settlement. We coordinate with your accountant, solicitor and the vendor's side through to handover, and stay your specialist for the lending that comes after.

Customer feedback

Bridgette Gambanga
My husband and I are veterinarians who were looking to buy our first practice. After a lengthy search and process I am happy to say that we are now the proud owners of a great practice and premises in Bundaberg, QLD. It wouldn’t have happened without the help that we received from Jack Meagher from Med X Finance who was there to guide us through the process of acquiring both the business and practice. From the very first call, Jack was absolutely amazing. He was extremely helpful, reassuring and he went above and beyond what we expected. He was always available to take a call, respond to emails and always made a plan to make sure everything went smoothly. We are happy to recommend him to anyone. We are already thinking of engaging him for our next project. Thank you Jack & Med X Finance –we wouldn't have done it without you! You deserve 6+ stars. Looking forward to our next project with you!

Frequently asked questions

Can I buy a practice with no deposit?

For eligible medical professionals, often yes: up to 100% goodwill lending is available on practice purchases. Every lender approaches it differently, so the honest answer for your deal comes out of a call, not a headline.

Is buying an existing practice easier to finance than starting one?

Usually, because the cash flow already exists and the lender can see it. If you are weighing both paths, compare with starting a medical practice before you decide.

Can I fund a refresh of the practice at the same time?

Yes. Many acquisitions include an upgrade of the rooms or equipment shortly after settlement, and it is usually cleaner to structure that upfront. See practice fitout finance.

What if I am buying into a practice as a partner, not buying all of it?

Partner buy-ins and buy-outs are financed the same way, against your share of the goodwill and earnings. The structure work sits in how the practice entities are set up, which is a conversation for your specialist and your accountant together.

Does using MedX Finance cost me anything?

No. We are paid by the lender when your loan settles, and we are transparent about those arrangements. No cost, no obligation, at any point.

Found a practice, or still looking?.

Either way, fifteen minutes with a specialist tells you what you could fund. No cost, no credit check, no obligation.

We'll contact you within the hour, 8am to 8pm, seven days a week (AEST).
